5 fall fashion trends that can handle real life
/Which of these are you more likely to dress for on an average weekend? a) A fabulously fancy affair where you’ll walk max 20 paces and be in a warm, dry, wind-free space. b) A fun but utterly unglamorous outing that involves walking, playing or being in the elements. As I waded through a corn pit full of kids (and who knows what else) at a fall festival the other Sunday, it struck me that “b” was where my life was at! How about you? If your days are more on-the-go than elegant, you too need clothes that can keep up. Here are some of the top trends that can hack swimming in corn, wading in mud – or whatever your wonderful weekend may bring.
1. Coats fit for a queen (out for a walk)
There’s an abundance of outerwear trends this season but not all of them look or act the part for rugged pursuits. Faux fur jackets and glossy trenches are lovely, but may not be at home in a corn pit. Happily, there are legit outdoorsy options that are fiercely fashionable this fall. Those quilted coats the queen and Kate Middleton favor for royal rambles: totally on trend. Puffer pieces, arguably the difference between life and death in far northern climates: found in the fanciest stores. Many of these warm wonders are washable too. So, you need not fear the corn…or whatever other substances you find yourself in.
2. Boots that can jump in muddy puddles
Pardon the Pepper Pig reference, but muddy puddles are a reality of many outdoor expeditions – whether or not you’re a British TV character who loves jumping in them. So it is with great gratitude that we herald the return of the combat boot. With their low heals, lug soles and sturdy silhouettes, these boots are made for (mucky) walking – yet chic enough for celebs like Kristen Stewart to wear on the red carpet. Available at every price point from Dr. Martens to Prada.
3. Pants that pack a big punch with little effort
Yesterday, my boss came to work wearing some killer cranberry cords. We all oo-ed and ah-ed at them. Five minutes later, I ran into a colleague from another department. She too was talking about my boss’s pants. Colorful trousers are just as wearable, practical and durable as any other bottoms – they just make more of a statement. Throw on a pair of verdant velvet skinnies or Bordeaux baggies with a neutral top, et voila. An instantly interesting, on-trend outfit that’s still casual and comfortable enough to play in.
4. Sweaters that warm your body and your heart
This time of year is always sweater season, but this year it’s SWEATER season in capital letters. Tastemakers can’t stop talking about jumpers – with the ones that actually keep you warm being particularly hot (sorry). Outdoorsy styles like fisherman’s knits are quite the catch (sorry again). As are argyle and Fair Isle. You can also add interest either with color (pick from a spoil of saturated shades) or details, particularly in are on the arm and shoulder. Just make sure to get something washable so you’re not inhibited by precious clothing.
5. Hats - for every head
Hats do wonders when you’re out and about. Yes, they keep you warm. But they can also keep your hair dry/ frizz-free/under control and add some wit to your wardrobe. Don’t deny yourself with “I’m not a hat person.” With so many of-the-moment options there’s surely a style for you! Beanies, pom pom hats and berets will all stay put no matter how much you’re moving. This will allow you to focus on whatever you’re doing and who you’re doing it with…and forget about how fabulous you look doing it!
